Lucas - Hardy

Waynetown - A most distressing accident occurred here Tuesday afternoon at
the warehouse of WH Lucas. Hardy, a little son of Mr. Lucas, was
playing in the warehouse and unthoughtedly crawled in a large
grain chute, which is used for loading cars. No sooner had he
entered it than several hundred bushels of wheat slipped down
from the upper part of the bin and completely covered him up.
Assistance was rendered immediately and the little fellow was
rescued from the awful situation, but not until life was extinct.
The parents have the sympathy of the entire community in their
sad bereavement. Interment took place at the Masonic Cemetery
Wednesday.

Tuesday, word was brought to this city that Hardy Lucas a
bright ten year old son of William H. Lucas at Waynetown had been
smothered in a wheat bin. Mr. Lucas is a grain dealer at
Waynetown and his son was playing in the granary when someone
opened a chute below to draw off wheat he was drawn down and
under the wheat in such a manner that he was smothered before
assistance could reach him.
